One of the best friends I ever had used to say to me "man, you play too much." It is the spirit of our age to "play."
Now we do have things we are deadly serious about. We are serious about our recreation. We are serious about making sure we don't get cheated of a weekend. We are serious in making certain that we take nice vacations. We are serious about which condo or motor home we buy for our vacations. And we are deadly serious about hording up money for a blissful retirement.
But how serious are we when it comes to matters of eternity? The norm, especially among the young, seems to be to stay out of such sticky discussions and to shy away from a conversation about Christ.
It would do us well to consider the words of Sir Francis Walsingham:
“I am serious; for all are serious round about me. God is serious in observing us – Christ is serious in interceding for us – the Spirit is serious in striving with us – the truths of God are serious – our spiritual enemies are serious in their endeavors to ruin us – poor lost sinners are serious in hell – and why then should not you and I be serious too?”
